12:50 PM – 1:50 PM | AAG Presidential Address

The AAG, in partnership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, is a founding member of the Science and Human Rights Coalition, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in Fall 2019. Science and Human Rights events were featured at the AAG Meetings in New York City in 2012, so it is appropriate to return to this theme 10 years later as AAG returns to New York in 2022. Other AAG meetings (e.g. 2009, 2017, and 2019) have featured this theme. The SHR Coalition was founded on the goal of promoting ratification of Article 15 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights: the human right to benefit from science. Coalition members, including geographers, engage in educational and public policy projects promoting science and human rights across multiple disciplines. Framing principles include “recognizing the right of everyone to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications; conserving, developing, and diffusing science; respecting the freedom indispensable for scientific research, and recognizing the benefits of international contacts and co-operation in the scientific field” (AAAS SHR 2020; ICESCR, 1966:4). This address will highlight the roles played by AAG, Geography, and Geographers in the coalition and beyond, address the broader impacts that geographers can and do contribute to promoting Science and Human Rights, and highlight the roles that Geography plays in ongoing global existential challenges including the COVID 19 Pandemic, Climate Change, access to water, and other areas where the human right to the benefits of scientific progress should prevail.

7:00 PM – 10:00 PM | World Geography Bowl

The World Geography Bowl is a quiz bowl tournament held annually since 1993 at the Annual Meeting of the AAG. Teams of graduate and undergraduate geography students selected from the AAG's regional divisions will compete in the round-robin tournament. The Championship Round will begin at approximately 10:30 p.m. The World Geography Bowl Committee would like to thank the AAG for sponsoring the 2022 national competition through its contributions to the student travel fund, which assists regional divisions in sending student team members to the AAG Annual Meeting.

Sun. 27 Feb.

5:20-6:40 PM | Presidential Plenary on Climate Justice

As the effects of climate change pummel the globe, they are doing so in a highly unequal way. Those least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions are also the most vulnerable to suffering its effects, as a result of historical and geographical processes including colonialism, racial capitalism, and dispossession. This disproportionate vulnerability also further exacerbates racial, gendered, socioeconomic, and other forms of inequity. Injustice plays out at many scales and in many realms. Projects aimed at adaptation or resilience may be as devastating for historically marginalized people as climate change effects themselves. Mitigation measures may also exacerbate injustice, for example through disregard for territorial claims in mining for materials needed in renewable energy technologies.

7: 00-8:00 PM | Geography Education Specialty Group Business Meeting

Elevating educators in the American Association of Geographers (AAG) becomes crucial as institutional support wanes for the discipline in K-12 and higher education.  AAG's Geography Education Specialty Group (GESG) organizes an annual business meeting to address the following tasks: 1) determine how GESG funds ought to be spent, 2) hold elections for leadership positions, and 3) discuss strategies to improve GESG’s support and outreach to members.  Become part of the conversation for how GESG can help reinvent and advance geography education.

The Business Meeting will also feature finalists for the 2022 Gail Hobbs Student Paper Competition.
